I make art that use science as a tool, both technically and metaphorically. I use methods that were meant for imaging of scientific phenomena for artistic ends. I also recognize the vast aquifers of metaphor that lie in the sciences.  I do this in several ways. I exploit optics and optical concepts to both make art and display it. I study the brain’s visual system to inform everything from how I take pictures and make the digital constructions, to the designs of the installations.

My work at NASA was to develop and employ scientific imaging methods to make measurements and to visualize phenomena. I operated, in my mind, as an artist able to provide technical imaging services to my colleagues, NASA programs, and its customers in a collaborative environment. I came to realize that art and science are two sides of the same coin. I absorbed the knowledge around me, gleaning both technique and metaphor that served my art, which has expanded beyond photography. My apologies in advance if you are allergic to my scientific accent, but I can’t seem to help myself.
